Poland line up Argentina friendly
December 9, 2001
Poland are set to add Argentina to their list of pre-World Cup friendly opponents after they were offered the pick of four South American nations to play in April.
The Polish FA, who were the first European side to qualify for the World Cup, will confirm the fixture if they agree to pay the visiting nation a sum thought to be £140,000 for the match.
Germany-based Argentinian agent Oscar Villon told the Polish press: "I am looking for a European opponent for Argentina, Paraguay, Costa Rica and Uruguay. These teams are coming to Europe because they want to prepare here for World Cup finals.
"Argentina are playing against Germany on April 17 in Stuttgart and then they would like to play another game. They asked me about possible opponents and I thought about Poland.
"The problem is that Argentina want £140,000 for a friendly game. Paraguay, Costa Rica and Uruguay are much cheaper."
The Polish FA, who have already arranged games in Cyprus against the Faroe Islands (February 10) and Northern Ireland three days later, will respond to the request in the next week.
If the Argentina game is given the green light, it will probably be played at the biggest stadium in Poland, the Silesian Stadium in Chorzow.
Poland have been drawn in Group D alongside Portugal, South Korea and the USA.
