Veron believes Bielsa is Argentina's trump card

ROME, May 13 (AFP) -- Argentina midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron said Monday that coach Marcelo Bielsa was the reason why the Latin American country is favoured by many to win the 2002 World Cup which starts later this month.

Veron, who plays his club football for Manchester United, was speaking at Lazio's Formello training camp where Argentina are preparing a bid for what would be a third world title.

And the playmaker is convinced that Bielsa can emulate Cesar Luis Menotti in 1978 and Carlos Bilardo in 1986 in leading Argentina to a third crown. "I have to say above all that we are very lucky to have someone exceptional like Bielsa," said Veron.

"He manages to make things understood with the minimum words and he has a gift for motivating that helps you bring out the best in yourself. He can be our secret weapon for the World Cup."

Argentina's last victory in 1986 was widely perceived as down to one man - Diego Maradona - but Veron said the modern-day team was a unit rather than a vehicle for a star.

"There is not one outstanding star," said Veron. "You can't win with just one player but only with the commitment of the whole team. We know it will be hard but the fact we are favourites is no burden - we must merely be humble and work hard."

The United midfielder said he was not worried about an injured Achilles tendon, saying: "I am feeling better and ready to work with the team again." Argentina are drawn in the 'group of death' alongside England, Nigeria and Sweden.
