Veron blasts English critics

ROME, May 13 (AFP) -- Juan Sebastian Veron said Monday he believed Argentina's upcoming World Cup clash with England had fuelled press criticism of him during a difficult first season with Manchester United.

Veron compared his ordeal to that of England's Swedish coach Sven-Goran Eriksson who has recently faced reports about alleged sex romps with Anglo-Swedish TV presenter Ulrika Jonsson.

Speaking at Lazio's Formello training base where Argentina are preparing for the World Cup Veron said he had no doubts about his ability.

"We all know well how I am," said Veron who was revered by Lazio fans for his part in the 1999-2000 Scudetto-winning season. "This all started up when the (World Cup) draw was made, considering that I am Argentinian."

Argentina are drawn with England, Nigeria and Sweden in the World Cup 'group of death'. And the midfielder said he believed that is why Swede Eriksson has also been through the mill.

"Eriksson knows what it is like - look what's happened to him lately," said Veron. "But it's not going to affect me as far as the continuation of my career in England is concerned."

Veron said he hoped England star David Beckham would be fit for the World Cup despite an apparent inability for the two to flourish together for Manchester United.

"I really hope he will be playing against us," said Veron. "But obviously I hope he is not on form because he is an immense talent. "Our's is a group of iron," said Veron. "That's true but it can also serve to motivate us."

Asked if Argentina were favourites Veron said: "We must not think about that. Our objective is to win but it won't be easy because there are great teams like Italy, France and Brazil and if we want to lift that trophy we will have to meet them all."
