Maradona over Pele in voting for all-time team

YOKOHAMA, Japan -- The fans voted, and Diego Maradona edged Pele.

In a fifaworldcup.com vote to name soccer's all-time greatest team, Maradona received 111,035 votes to start in the midfield. Pele, who led Brazil to three World Cup titles, was the top striker with 107,539 votes.

Starting up front with Pele on the list was Dutchman Johan Cruyff (53,645 votes) and Brazil's Romario (29,480).

Sharing the midfield with Maradona were French star Zinedine Zidane (80,527), Italy's Roberto Baggio (55,625) and France's Michel Platini (53,783).

The defense was led by Germany's Franz Beckenbauer (81,442), Italian Paolo Maldini (58,523) and Brazil's Roberto Carlos (58,200).

Lev Yashin of the Soviet Union (24,587) was picked as the best goalkeeper.
