Top scoring potential and intuition are some of the
internationally acknowledged virtues of the blond striker.
For Gabriel Batistuta's criticists it is getting harder every
time to neglect the best striker of the Argentine selection.
Not only is he the all time top scorer of the national team
-- also ahead of Diego Maradona -- he is also the most
outstanding player in Italy's primary soccer league. His
goals are loved by Fiorentina's tifosi as well as by the most
passionate fans of the albiceleste team.
Despite the fact that Gabriel has won the affection of the
people, tearing up the nets of his opponents' goals, he has
not always been sure of a spot in the line-up of the national
team.
Batistuta started his professional career with Newell's and
the following year he transferred to River, where he got to
know Daniel Passarella, who at that time was the coach of the
millionaire team. At the end of the season '89/'90 Passarella
considered him useless and he went to play with Boca, where
after an irregular season he managed to regain himself and
ended up as the Argentine league top scorer. Next he was
summoned by Alfio Basile to take part in 1991's Copa America
in Chili. The Argentines became champions and the striker was
bought by Fiorentina. Passarella's comment on the transfer at
that time was: "They are making a big mistake in Florence.
They should have bought a hard-core striker like Caniggia. By
contracting Batistuta they made a big mistake, he does not
have any technical skills...". The time and the goals have
proved Passarella to be wrong, and when he had become the
national team coach he had to summon Batistuta for France's
World Cup, even after having him left out of Argentina's last
qualifying matches.
With his fabulous performance in the Italian league, the one
thing left to conquer is a world title with Argentina. He
took part in the World Cups of 1994 and 1998. In the US the
national team did not get past the quarter finals, but the
striker was one of the team's best weapons and in the match
against Greece he managed to score three times. In France he
scored five goals and ended one goal behind top scorer Davor
Suker.
Today Bati is focused on winning a scudetto with Fiorentina
and, if he remains good enough, on getting to the World Cup
2002 in Korea and Japan. "Of course I would like to go to
that World Cup, but for now I am solely thinking of
maintaining my level", Batistuta stated recently. With regard
to the end of his career the top scorer of the calcio stated
that he would like to finish at Boca, the club where his
development into one of the most important soccer players of
the world once took off. When he is asked what he will do
when he hangs up his boots, Batistuta responds: "I will
return to live in Reconquista. My future lies there, and I
might help the youth of the town to pick up the sport".

le reconocen internacionalmente al rubio delantero.
Los detractores de Gabriel Batistuta cada vez tienen más
inconvenientes para negarle el título de mejor delantero de
la selección Argentina. No sólo es el goleador histórico del
seleccionado -- incluso por encima de Diego Maradona --, sino
que también es la figura más destacada en la primera división
del fútbol italiano. Sus goles son amados tanto por los
tifosi de Fiorentina como por los hinchas más fervientes del
conjunto albiceleste.
A pesar de que Gabriel se ganó el cariño de la gente
rompiendo las redes de los arcos de sus rivales, no siempre
tuvo un lugar asegurado dentro del equipo nacional.
Batistuta comenzó su carrera profesional en Newell´s, y al
año siguiente pasó a River donde conoció a Daniel Passarella,
que en ese entonces era el técnico del equipo millonario. Al
terminar la temporada del año 89/90 Passarella lo consideró
prescindible y pasó a jugar en Boca, donde luego de una
temporada irregular, logró consolidarse y terminó como
goleador del torneo argentino. En ese entonces había sido
convocado por Alfio Basile para disputar la Copa América de
Chile en el año '91. Argentina fue el campeón y el delantero
fue adquirido por la Fiorentina. Passarella dijo en ese
momento sobre la transferencia: "En Florencia se equivocaron.
Tendrían que haber comprado un delantero ya hecho, como
Caniggia. Fue un error que contrataran a Batistuta, no tiene
nada de técnica...". El tiempo y los goles, le negaron la
razón al que fuera entrenador del seleccionado, y Passarella
tuvo que convocarlo para el Mundial de Francia, a pesar de
haberlo dejado afuera de los últimos partidos que disputó la
Argentina en las eliminatorias.
Con su presente fabuloso en la liga italiana, la única cuenta
pendiente es la de ganar un título del mundo con la
Argentina. Disputó el Mundial del '94 y el del '98. En EE.UU.
el seleccionado no pasó los cuartos de final, pero el
delantero fue una de sus mejores armas, y llegó a marcar tres
goles en el partido que disputó frente a Grecia. En Francia
convirtió cinco tantos y terminó a un tanto del goleador,
Davor Suker.
Hoy Bati apunta a ganar un scudetto con Fiorentina y, si bien
falta bastante, llegar a la Copa del Mundo del 2002 en Corea
y Japón. "Por supuesto que me gustaría llegar a ese Mundial,
pero ahora sólo pienso en mantener mi nivel", aseguró hace
poco Batistuta. Sobre el final de su carrera, el goleador del
calcio aseguró que le gustaría finalizar en Boca, club donde
logró trascender para luego convertirse en una de los
jugadores más importantes del fútbol mundial. Cuando se le
pregunta que hará cuando cuelgue los botines Batistuta
responde: "Voy a regresar a vivir a Reconquista. Mi futuro
estará allí, y puede que ayude a los chicos de esa ciudad
para que encaren bien el deporte".
