After everything he has achieved, the goals he has scored, he is still questioned by some and this hurts
him. The question make him shudder. His uneasiness was palpable. This seems to be to much. We felt he wanted to shout his frustration but that's not his way. This took place just before the match
Argentina/Colombia started. When the match was over he was still upset. Not even scoring his 50th goal for the 'white and blue' helped him forget what had taken place.
"No, I didn't celebrate too much because surely there's some who still doubt what I could give", he
said before leaving the pitch. At the moment he couldn't think of the team, he couldn't hide his distress.
Why was he feeling this way....Bati could not find an explanation for his being contested after all these
years. Why should there be any doubt over if he or Crespo or Palermo or who...should be Argentina's
center forward. He's convinced no one has given as he has to the National Team and the numbers back him. This discussion is unexplicable to him.
The whole world acknowledge him, the best clubs in the world fight for him, he scored more goals than any other in Argentina's National team and still there's people here in Argentina that question him. He felt himself being tested every time and again. So he ask: "What else can I do". This was told by someone very close to the striker.
Batistuta returned from Cordoba and went to have dinner at "El Corralon" Restaurant with his manager
Settimio Aloisio. From there he made a call to Florence and talked with Irina and the boys, he also
called Reconquista to talked to his family. He rested for a few hours and then in the morning in Aloisio's office he met Santo Biasatti for his T.V. program, where he promoted his line of body products and perfume. Also he spoke to some radio stations. Where he said he was not obssesed with breaking records and that he will like to be captain of the National Team some day. He also said: "Yes, I'm hurt by all those things said during the "Copa America"...I've always given my best to the team and you... giving no consideration to this, put me at the same level of the others. This he said to radio station "La Red".

La pregunta lo hizo estremecer a Gabriel Batistuta. Su fastidio se potenciaba al comprobar una vez más que todavía le pedían que rindiese exámenes. Algo que lo irrita porque le resulta incomprensible. Ya estaba susceptible con el tema y entendió que esa gota hacía desbordar el vaso de la tolerancia. "¿Sentís que todavía estás en deuda con el seleccionado?", lo
interrogaron antes del partido con Colombia. Respondió con algunas ironías. Pero tuvo ganas de hacerlo con mucha furia.
Cuando terminó el amistoso con Colombia continuaba molesto. Ni su gol número 50 con la camiseta celeste y blanca le sacaba esa idea de la cabeza. "No
festejo demasiado porque seguramente todavía hay algunos a los que les quedan dudas sobre lo que puedo dar", sentenció antes de dejar la cancha. Algo egoísta, sólo pensó en él y no en el triunfo del equipo en ese momento, pero es que no podía ocultar la rabia. Pero, ¿por qué estaba tan fastidioso? Hoy, Batistuta no comprende cómo todavía es discutido en el seleccionado. Por qué aún se abre la polémica sobre si él o Crespo o Palermo o quién sea debe ser el centroatacante de la Argentina. Está convencido de que nadie le ha dado tanto al seleccionado como él, entonces no se explica la discusión.
"Mientras el mundo lo reconoce, los mejores clubes se pelean por tenerlo
y ha hecho goles como nadie en el seleccionado, en la Argentina todavía lo discuten; él siente que aquí muchos aún dudan y que debe seguir rindiendo exámenes día a día... por eso se pregunta qué más debe hacer", confesó ayer alguien muy cercano al goleador.
Antes de marcharse del país, ayer a las 17.30 en un vuelo de Air France,
Batistuta vivió con tranquilidad el día después de su gol 50. Regresó de
Córdoba en la madrugada y se fue a cenar al restaurant El Corralón con
Settimio Aloisio, su representante. Llamó a su esposa Irina, en Florencia, y
a su familia, en Reconquista. Descansó y horas después, ya por la
mañana, en las oficinas de Aloisio, recibió al periodista Santo Biasatti
para su programa televisivo, promocionó su nueva línea de perfume,
"Esencia de campeón", y dialogó por algunas radios. Confesó que no lo
obsesionan los récords y que le gustaría ser el capitán de la selección.
"Sí, estoy dolido y sigo bastante ofendido por lo que se dijo que pasó en
la Copa América... Di mucho por la selección y siempre estuve con el
corazón en la selección; di muchísimo desde el punto de vista anímico,
pero caí en la bolsa yo también", admitió a La Red. Extendió el almuerzo y se fue. Y se marchó enojado.
