The striker scored 49 goals in the national team jersey and tonight he could reach half a hundred.
A year before he had already debuted in the first division of Newell's, when in 1989 he accepted an invitation of Deportivo Italiano, who went to take part in a friendly tournament in Viareggio. After four matches and three goals, Italy had discovered the name Batistuta. On their way back, the delegation made a stop in Naples. Those were the days of Maradona's dominion and Gabriel took a picture which he kept like a treasure. These years he would be taking his first steps in the calcio and he would also transform into the emblematic figure of the Argentine national team.
Tonight, at age 30, Gabriel Batistuta can achieve his 50th goal in the blue-white jersey. The last and only time that he was here, he scored three times against Bosnia, so why not believe that today he can score once against Colombia? His insatiable hunger for goals inspires confidence; to persevere Argentina's ambitions at his return in Marcelo Bielsa's team - he only played against Holland, in Amsterdam - and to
continue rising among the world's top scorers.
Batistuta is eleventh in the world's picked men of all top scorers. But above him there are several names that are celebrated in leagues that are far more inferior - judging his accomplishment by its true merits - and, on top of that, who have already retired or who have had their best days.
In the national team Batistuta's unconditional bond with the goal took off instantly. It was a mutual and irresistable attraction. Hardly 11 days after having made his debut against Brazil (1-1), in Curitiba, June 27, 1991, Batigol hit the net in his second match with the national representation. It was July 8 of that year, in Santiago, Chile, for the Copa America. That night Argentina defeated Venezuela with 3-0 and
the killer scored twice.
That is where the story began. Of the 68 matches he played with the national team - only behind Ruggeri, Maradona, Simeone, Gallego and Passarella - he scored in no less than 35 of them, with the peculiarity that every time he scored he made a useful contribution to the match, as it was won or
tied by Argentina almost everytime. Only once, in Pasadena, a goal by him did not help to avoid a defeat: the 3-2 against Romania, which meant the elimination of Argentina in the World Cup USA.
Of his 49 goals, 8 were made out of a penalty kick - today almost a nightmare for those who execute them for their country - and he never failed to meet with his responsibility. On top of that, he scored triples against Greece, Bosnia and Jamaica, and doubles against Venezuela, Australia, Slovakia and Chile. He bursts with confidence. That is because on the looser's bench there is no set place for his bond with the goal. Too much credit. Evidently, the name Batistuta only stands for his signature.

Un año antes ya había debutado en la primera división de
Newell's cuando en 1989 aceptó una invitación de Deportivo
Italiano, que iba a participar en un torneo amistoso, en
Viareggio. Después de cuatro partidos y tres goles, Italia
descubrió el apellido Batistuta. De regreso, la delegación se
detuvo en Nápoles. Eran los días del reinado de Maradona y
Gabriel se sacó una foto que conserva como un tesoro. Los
años pondrían al calcio a sus pies y también lo
transformarían en la figura emblemática del seleccionado
argentino.
Esta noche, a los 30 años, Gabriel Batistuta puede convertir
su tanto número 50 con la camiseta celeste y blanca. La
última, y única vez que estuvo por aquí, le anotó tres a
Bosnia, ¿por qué no creer entonces que hoy podrá marcar uno
contra Colombia? Su insaciable sed de gol invita a confiar.
Para sostener las ambiciones de la Argentina en su regreso al
equipo de Marcelo Bielsa - sólo jugó con Holanda, en
Amsterdam - y para seguir escalando entre los capocannonieri
del mundo.
Batistuta está undécimo entre todos los goleadores de
selección del planeta. Por delante tiene varios nombres que
sumaron sus gritos en competencias de muy relativa jerarquía
- valoriza su cosecha - y, además, ya se retiraron o no están
en plenitud.
El pacto incondicional de Batistuta con el gol, en el
seleccionado, nació de inmediato. Fue una atracción mutua e
irresistible. Apenas 11 días después de haber debutado con
Brasil (1-1), en Curitiba, el 27 de junio de 1991, Batigol se
anotó en la red en su segundo partido con el representativo
nacional. Fue el 8 de julio de aquel año, en Santiago, Chile,
por la Copa América. Esa noche la Argentina goleó a Venezuela
3 a 0 y el matador anotó dos veces.
Allí comenzaría la historia. De los 68 partidos que jugó en
el seleccionado - sólo detrás de Ruggeri, Maradona, Simeone,
Gallego y Passarella - anotó nada menos que en 35 de ellos,
con la particularidad de que cada vez que él festejo, casi
siempre sirvió para que la Argentina ganara o empatase su
partido. Sólo en una ocasión, en Pasadena, un tanto suyo no
alcanzó para revertir una derrota: el 3 a 2 ante Rumania que
marcó la eliminación de la Argentina del Mundial de los
Estados Unidos.
De sus 49 goles consiguió ocho de penal -hoy casi una
pesadilla para quienes los ejecutan el país- y fue infalible
siempre que asumió la responsabilidad. Además, cosecha
tripletas contra Grecia, Bosnia y Jamaica, y dobletes ante
Venezuela, Australia, Costa de Marfil, México, Israel,
Japón, Eslovaquia y Chile. Está pleno de confianza. Será
porque en el banco de los romperredes, su convenio con el gol
no tiene plazo fijo. Le sobra crédito. Claro, el apellido
Batistuta es garantía a sola firma.
