Batistuta is not afraid of the competition

ARGENTINA, (El Sitio) -- Gabriel is confident he will be the central striker of Argentina, and with an irony that does not detract from his humbleness he remembers that he made "some goals in the national team" as he remains calm while the competition for his position increases every time.
"I try to play well and to pick up the trainer's ideas, he decides who is the better one to play. It does not all depend on me, but I am thirty years old and besides having scored several goals in the national team, I have some confidence of my self", he emphasizes with a smile.
Anyway, he admits that nowadays "there is a nice load of attackers", among them Juan Esnaider, who is currently part of the group, and also Hernán Crespo, Julio Cruz and Martín Palermo, who have stood in line for the team directed by Marcelo Bielsa.
The all time top scorer of the national team is the center of attention in the group Bielsa summoned for Wednesday's match against Colombia, in Cordoba, and all microphones, cameras and writers of the press are aimed at his face and words.

"I want to be in the World Cup but we do not have much time to be in the national team, so it is useles to plan what will come or to think about what happened. I live by the moment, I am here now, I feel good and I hope to come back and be there, but in order to do so one must do things well", he explained.
With all his experience and gained glory in the national team, he still feels "just one more link in the group" and not the flag-officer, though he acknowledges that the people offer him greater affection than to others.
"I have always felt just one more, when we are here we are all equal, though some have more charisma than others, but it depends on how the people see us on the outside. Of course all the affection of the people makes me happy, but it is not that I started to play soccer for that", the goals scorer said.
And the public has adapted him as the successive idol after Diego Maradona, who Batistuta says to miss: "I liked playing with Diego. He no longer plays and it is normal that everyone misses him, but he is no longer there, unfortunately".
The machinegunner pointed out that he will be "happier if on Wednesday things turn out well" against Colombia, in a match that for him, as well as for the rest of the players, will not contain anything of revenge for the 0-5 match he played in the Estadio Monumental.
In his only participation in Bielsa's team, he scored the goal in the 1-1 draw against Holland in Amsterdam, in a match where, in his opinion, the national team performed well.
"Against Holland we played well, and one always hopes to repeat a good performance, but every match has his own story, it is not that easy. The idea of the technical staff and the players is to improve match by match", he added.
Finally, he made clear that, if Bielsa asks him, he will definitely be the one in charge to take the penalty kicks, because, though with Fiorentina he did not take them for some time, he has picked up the responsibility again.

A while ago I did not take them in Fiorentina but I am the one in charge again, I have alswyas had the confidence, but sometimes it is necessary to step aside and to think about the team, it is not solely a matter of pride, to know when you do well and when you do badly", he concluded.

abandona su humildad recuerda que hizo "algunos goles en la
selección" como para estar tranquilo, a pesar de que la
competencia en su puesto es cada vez mayor.
"Yo trato de jugar bien y de captar la idea del técnico, él
decide quién está mejor para jugar. No depende todo de mí,
pero tengo 30 años y aparte hice algunos goles en la
selección como para tener un poco de confianza personal",
subrayó con una sonrisa.
De todas maneras, admite que en la actualidad "hay una buena
camada de atacantes", entre ellos Juan Esnaider, quien está
en el plantel actual, además de Hernán Crespo, Julio Cruz y
Martín Palermo, quienes pasaron por las filas del equipo
dirigido por Marcelo Bielsa.
El máximo goleador de la historia del seleccionado acapara la
mayor atención en el plantel que convocó Bielsa para el
partido del miércoles ante Colombia, en Córdoba, y todos los
micrófonos, cámaras y grabadores de la prensa buscan su
rostro y su palabra.
"No es que me molesta la competencia, siempre confié en mis
posibilidades. Estoy contento porque Bielsa también confía en
mí; es como siempre, si hacés las cosas bien vas a seguir
estando, si no va a venir otra gente", señaló.
Es que, más allá de sus antecedentes, sabe que debe demostrar
"en la cancha cada partido" que es el mejor en su puesto.
Batistuta jugó un sólo partido en la era Bielsa, ante Holanda
el 31 de marzo, ya que para la serie de amistosos frente a
Brasil estuvo lesionado, situación que lo molestaba "por no
poder estar en la selección, pero no porque otro juegue en el
puesto" de centroatacante.
Dice que cada vez que lo llaman se pone "muy contento" y
responde "con la misma ilusión que tenía a los 20 años",
asegura que disfruta "vivir el momento de cada convocatoria,
sin pensar en lo que vendrá", a pesar de que, por su edad, el
del 2002 puede ser su última Copa del Mundo.
"Quiero estar en el Mundial pero no tenemos mucho tiempo para
estar en la Selección, así que es inútil programar lo que
vendrá o pensar en lo que pasó. Vivo el momento, estoy acá
ahora, estoy bien y espero volvera e estar, pero para eso hay
que hacer las cosas bien", explicó.
Con toda su experiencia y la gloria ganada en el equipo
nacional, aún se siente "uno más del plantel" y no un
abanderado, aunque reconoce que la gente le brinda mayor
cariño que al resto.
"Siempre me sentí uno más, cuando estamos acá somos todos
iguales, después unos tienen más carisma que otros, pero
depende de cómo nos ve la gente desde afuera. Naturalmente
que todo el cariño de la gente me pone contento, pero no es
que empecé a jugar en el fútbol para eso", dijo el goleador.
Y es que el público lo ha tomado como el ídolo sucesor de
Diego Maradona, a quien Batistuta dice extrañar: "Cuando
jugué con Diego me divertí. El no juega más y es normal que
todos lo extrañemos, pero no está más, lamentablemente".
El artillero remarcó que estará "más contento si el miércoles
las cosas salen bien" ante Colombia, en un partido que para
él, como para el resto de los jugadores, no tendrá nada de
revancha de aquel 0-5 del estadio Monumental, partido que él
jugó.
En su única participación con el equipo de Bielsa, marcó el
gol del empate 1-1 ante Holanda en Amsterdam, en un partido
que, según opinó, el seleccionado cumplió una buena
actuación.
"Contra Holanda jugamos bien, y uno siempre espera repetir
una buena actuación, pero cada partido tiene su historia, no
es tan fácil. La idea del cuerpo técnico y de los jugadores
es mejorar partido a partido", agregó.
Por último, dejó en claro que, si Bielsa se lo propone, con
seguridad será el encargado de patear los penales, porque, a
pesar de que en Fiorentina estuvo un tiempo sin ejecutarlos,
volvió a tomar esa responsabilidad.
"Siempre los pateé en la selección. Hace rato que no pateamos
en la Fiorentina pero otra vez soy el encargado, confianza
tuve siempre, pero a veces hay que dar un paso al costado y
pensar en el equipo, no es solo cuestión de orgullo, saber
cuando te va bien y cuando te va mal", concluyó.
