"That needs to be said to the directors; we are players. I myself would love to play with Fiorentina and with the national team at the same time, but it can not be like that. The schedules and stuff are made by the directors and there is nothing we can do about it."

"Bielsa would have been more satisfied if he could have worked with 30 players, but evidently that is not possible. We just try to do what he asks us in the best possible way."

And how do you feel about what Bielsa asks you?

"No, that has been, it happened. I don't have any feeling of revenge."

"Everyone who talks with me has the same feeling but at the moment of talking they don't say that. Yes, it bothered me, but I am not going to explain to anyone how I feel about the national team... I already show that on the pitch."

"I did not set myself to think about that. It is not that it bothers me..., I don't know how to explain...; I have always had trust in my own possibilities, I am glad because Bielsa also has trust... and nothing else. "Yes, there are people who are playing very well. There is a nice load of attackers."

Did you give them advantages because of your injuries?

"The trainer decides that."

But you are full of confidence.
"I am 30 years old... I made several goals with the national team, enough to have a boost of confidence, but it does not all depend on me."

Do you miss Maradona?
"No, I don't miss him. I liked playing with him, but Diego no longer plays and there are others now. It is sad but true but unfortunately he is no longer there.

And are you irreplaceable?
"I don't have to respond to that. And, on top of that, it does not interest me much."

Cada vez es más dura la lucha entre los clubes y la selección?
Esta es una lucha que viene desde lejos. Los equipos para los cuales jugamos son los que no pagan y justamente cuando nos piden se enojan un poco. Pero con la Fiorentina nunca hubo problemas.

Jamás dudaste de la prioridad que tiene para vos la selección?
Nunca.

Aunque a veces no pudieras decidir vos...
Nunca puedo decidir yo. El jugador no decide nada. Yo vengo pagado y tengo que respetar lo que decide el propietario del lugar donde trabajo.

Pero esto termina por perjudicar al seleccionado.
Eso hay que decírselo a los dirigentes; nosotros somos jugadores. A mí me gustaría jugar con la Fiorentina y la selección a la vez, pero no puede ser. Los calendarios y todas esas cosas las hacen los dirigentes y nosotros no podemos hacer nada.

Y se llega a la situación de hoy, que la selección se entrena con sólo 12 jugadores...
Bielsa estaría más contento si pudiera trabajar con 30 jugadores, pero evidentemente esto no es posible. Nosotros sólo tratamos de hacer lo mejor posible lo que él nos pide.

Y cómo te sentís con lo que Bielsa te pide?
Bien; el equipo puede funcionar; sólo necesita un poco de tiempo.

A ver..., el equipo tendría que jugar para vos?
Nunca un equipo jugó para mí, no tuve esa suerte. Además, no es lo que propone el planteo táctico de Bielsa; de todas maneras, estoy acostumbrado porque, generalmente, me tuve que inventar los goles solo, siempre ir a pelearla solo.

Cómo es eso de hacer todo solo?
Me parece lo más natural del mundo que uno tenga que pelear su lugar, en cualquier oficio. Lo que expreso es que nunca he tenido la suerte de que mi equipo juegue solamente para mi, estar parado en el área esperando que me pongan la pelota para hacer goles, lo digo en ese sentido. Después, es normal que cada uno pelee su lugar porque acá nadie te regala nada.

Junto con Simeone serán los dos sobrevivientes del 0-5 con Colombia, ¿vas por la revancha?
No, ya está, ya pasó. No tengo ningún ánimo de revancha.

Contra nada? Ahora volvés a la selección tras siete meses.
Que quede claro que por un solo motivo no estuve en las convocatorias anteriores: por mis lesiones. Fue el único motivo real. Después, hubo otros inventados...

Estás furioso todavía...
Todos los que hablan conmigo tienen la misma sensación, pero en el momento de decir las cosas no las dicen. Sí, a mí me molestó, pero no me voy a poner a explicarles a todos lo que siento por la selección..., ya lo demuestro en una cancha.

Crespo, Palermo, Cruz, Esnaider. Cuánta competencia.
No me puse a pensar en eso. No es que me moleste..., no lo sé explicar...; siempre confié en mis posibilidades, estoy contento porque Bielsa también confía... y nada más. Como siempre: si hacés las cosas bien vas a seguir estando, y si las hacés mal, va a venir otra gente.

Pero reconocés que tenés competidores importantes?
Sí, hay gente que está jugando muy bien. Hay una buena camada de atacantes.

Diste ventajas por la lesión?
Ahí lo único que me incomodaba era no poder estar en la selección, pero no me molestaba que otro jugase en mi puesto.

Si estás bien, ¿sentís que el puesto es tuyo?
Eso lo decide el técnico.

Pero te sobra confianza.
Tengo 30 años... hice algunos goles en la selección como para tener un pico de confianza, pero no depende todo de mí.

Lo extrañás a Maradona?
No, no lo extraño. Cuando jugué con Diego me divertí, pero Diego no juega más y ahora hay otros. Es inútil, pero ahora, lamentablemente, no está más.

Y vos sos irreemplazable?
Eso no lo tengo que responder yo. Y, además, no me interesa demasiado.

Sin miedo a los penales

En el fútbol argentino hay una psicosis con los penales. Pero Batistuta le escapa. "Siempre los ejecuté en la selección y hasta ahora me fue bien, no veo por qué no podría seguir pateándolos ahora", aclaró el goleador que, tras un paréntesis, ha vuelto a ser el encargado de ejecutarlos en Fiorentina.
