Batistuta returns after almost seven months. Although he is only one goal away from 50 goals and he is the all time top scorer of the national team, he states that he still has to earn his position in the line-up on the pitch.

We always ask the same thing: Are you still haunted by the 5-0 defeat against Colombia?
"And we always respond the same: that happened then, it is in the past now... Besides, since then we played several times against Colombia."

Is it a classical match, a revenge?
"No, personally I have not come with any grudge. I have come to play a match with the national team, to try and pick up even more of what Bielsa has in mind."

Is it hard to understand what Bielsa holds in mind?
"No, no, for me it isn't."

Do you miss Maradona?
"No, I don't. I liked playing with Diego very much, but he no longer plays, and there are others now. It is normal that all of us miss him, but useless. Unfortunately he is no longer there."

Long hair, the sunshine of the national team. Batistuta is happy, apart from the little annoyance when subjects are brought up repeatedly: "Do I have to go on responding the same over and over again?" he complains, however smiling. He likes to be back. His last match with the national team in Buenos Aires, and in Argentina, was over a year ago: May 25, 1998, against South Africa. It was that very same day, at River, that he scored his last goal on home soil.

"Wearing the Argentine jersey it is beautiful to play at anyone's side. If you are close, that is better, but in any way the important thing is to serve the blue-white."

For certain reasons, you almost missed out on Bielsa's era...
"There were not certain reasons, there was solely one: I was injured and I had not completely recuperated before the matches. That was the sole genuine reason. Later other reasons were made up."

It seems to matter to you that that is clear and when you talk it gets obvious you are dying to play...
"Everyone who speaks with me gets that impression, but then after I told how things are, they fail to tell that as such. It bothered me what was said during the Copa America, but I am not going to explain to everyone what I feel for the national team. I believe I demonstrate that whenever I enter the pitch. The people love me and know why I was not there."

And now Bati, how are you?
"My knee has recovered well enough for me to play rather carefully, I am in a good, not fantastic, but acceptable form."

A padlock-shaped, few-day beard, the eternal smile of the national team. Batistuta comes across satisfied: he returns. His last match with the blue-white was March 31, against Holland in Amsterdam. Of course he scored a goal that day. Until today it has been his only appearance in Bielsa's era.

Are you going to take the penalty kicks if Bielsa asks you to?
"Yes, yes, I have always taken them in the national team. And with Fiorentina, though for some time I let someone else do it, I am the one in charge again. I have always been confident about myself, but sometimes it is necessary to take a step back as it is not just a matter of pride. You need to watch the team and you need to know when you do well and when you do badly."

Is that what happened to Palermo in the Copa America?
"I don't know what crossed Palermo's mind..."

But you know he missed three penalty kicks?
"He seemed to be confident."

He returns. "Every time I am summoned for the national team I am pleased. When I started, in 1991, I intended to try the very most possible to extend my career in the national team. So far it went rather well for me. It has been eight years so far and I hope to stay on. As always it depends on how I will do in the matches".

Is there a lot of competition for your position at the moment?
"I never really made myself think about that... It is not that it bothers me or that I don't know, I don't know how to explain myself, I just don't put myself to think about it... I have always been confident about my possibilities, and I am glad Bielsa has that confidence too and nothing else. As always, if you do things well you will continue to stay, if you play bad someone else will come."

But you agree there are important names to play the number 9 position?
"Yes, there are people who are playing very well, there is a nice load of attackers."

Do you think you gave them benefits with your injuries?
"No, when I was injured the only thing that bothered me was not being able to be with the national team, not that someone else played on 'mío puesto', in my position."

When you are fine, do you feel as if the position belongs to you?
"The trainer decides that. The only thing I can do is to play well and to pick up the trainer's ideas, then we will see who is better."

But you appear confident...
"I am thirty years old... besides the fact that I scored several goals with the national team, I have a little personal confidence... But surely it does not all depend on me."

Batistuta regresa después de casi siete meses. Aunque está a un gol de los 50 y es el máximo artillero de la historia de la Selección, asegura que el puesto hay que ganárselo en la cancha.

Algunas muestras de la filosofía Batistuta en una mañana de octubre...

"Nunca pienso en el partido que pasó, ni cuando pierdo ni cuando gano".

"Vivo el momento, estoy acá, estoy bien, espero volver a estar, pero para volver a estar hay que hacer las cosas bien ahora".

"Siempre me sentí un jugador más en la Selección, cuando estamos acá somos todos iguales".

Gabriel Omar Batistuta tiene 30 años, 68 partidos en la Selección y 49 goles. Todo un currículum. Tiene, además, carisma. Decenas de grabadores y cámaras lo prueban, otra vez, en Ezeiza. Y Bati contesta.

Siempre te preguntamos lo mismo: ¿sigue vivo el fantasma del 5 a 0 contra Colombia?
"Y nosotros siempre respondemos lo mismo: ya está, ya pasó... Aparte, después jugamos varias veces con Colombia..."

Es un clásico, una revancha?
"No, yo personalmente no vine con ningún ánimo de revancha. Vine a jugar un partido con la Selección, para tratar de entender más todavía lo que pretende Bielsa."

Cuesta entender lo que pretende Bielsa?
"No, no, para mí no."

Extrañás a Maradona?
"No lo extraño. Cuando jugué con Diego me divertí, pero no juega más y hay otros. Es normal que todos lo extrañemos, pero es inútil. Lamentablemente, ya no está."

Pelo largo, sonrisa de Selección. Batistuta está contento, más allá del algún mínimo fastidio ante la repetición de los temas: "¿Tengo que contestar siempre lo mismo?", se queja, pero sonriendo. Le gusta estar de vuelta. Su último partido con la Selección en Buenos Aires, y en Argentina, fue hace más de un año: el 25 mayo de 1998, contra Sudáfrica. Ese día, en River, también hizo su último gol en estas tierras.

"Con la camiseta argentina es lindo jugar en cualquier lado. Si es cerca, es mejor, pero de todas maneras lo importante es ponerse la celeste y blanca."

Por distintas razones, casi no estuviste en la era Bielsa...
"No hay distintos motivos, hay uno solo: yo estaba lesionado y para los partidos no me había recuperado completamente. Ese es el único motivo real. Después hay otros motivos inventados."

Te importa que quede claro, y cuando hablás se nota que te morís por jugar...
"Todos los que hablan conmigo tienen la misma sensación, pero después en el momento de decir cómo están las cosas, no las dicen así. A mí me molestó lo que se dijo durante la Copa América, pero no le voy a explicar a todo el mundo lo que yo siento por la Selección. Creo que lo demuestro cada vez que entro a la cancha. La gente me quiere y sabe por qué no estuve."

Y ahora Bati, cómo estás?
"Me recuperé bastante bien de la rodilla y eso me permite jugar bastante tranquilo, estoy pasando un buen momento, no fantástico, pero sí aceptable."

Barbita candado de pocos días, eterna sonrisa de Selección. Batistuta sigue contento: vuelve. Su último partido con la celeste y blanca fue el 31 de marzo de este año, contra Holanda en Amsterdam. Ese día, por supuesto, hizo un gol. Es, hasta hoy, su única presencia en la era Bielsa.

"Yo sigo pensando lo mismo que pensaba antes del partido contra Holanda y voy a seguir pensando lo mismo: con Bielsa me encuentro bien, creo que el equipo puede dar muchas cosas, necesita sólo un poco de tiempo, un poco de trabajo, lógicamente."

Vas a patear los penales si te lo pide Bielsa?
"Sí, sí, los pateé siempre en la Selección. Y en la Fiorentina, aunque durante un tiempo dejé de hacerlo, soy el encargado otra vez. Confianza me tuve siempre, pero a veces hay que dar un paso al costado porque no es sólo cuestión de orgullo. Hay que mirar al equipo y hay que saber cuándo te va bien y cuándo te va mal."

Es lo que pasó con Palermo en la Copa América?
"No sé lo que pasó por la cabeza de Palermo..."

Pero sí sabés que erró tres penales...
"Se ve que se tenía confianza."

Vuelve. "Cada vez que me llaman a la Selección estoy contento. Cuando empecé, en el 91, me propuse tratar de alargar lo más posible mi carrera en la Selección. Hasta ahora me está yendo bastante bien. Son ocho años y espero seguir estando. Depende, como siempre, de lo que haga durante los partidos".

Es el momento de mayor competencia en tu puesto?
"Realmente no me puse a pensarlo... No es que me molesta, o no sé, no te sé explicar, no me puse a pensar... Yo siempre confié en mis posibilidades, estoy contento porque Bielsa también confía y nada más. Como siempre, si hacés las cosas bien vas a seguir estando, si jugás mal, va a venir otro."

Pero coincidís en que hay personajes importantes para jugar de nueve?
"Sí, hay gente que está jugando muy bien, hay una buena camada de atacantes."

Pensás que diste ventajas con tus lesiones?
"No, cuando estuve lesionado lo único que me molestaba era no poder estar en la Selección, no que otro juegue en 'mío puesto', digo, en mi puesto..."

Cuándo estás bien, sentís que el puesto es tuyo?
"Eso lo decide el técnico. Yo lo único que hago es tratar de jugar bien y de captar la idea del técnico, después él ve quién está mejor."

Pero se te nota confiado...
"Yo tengo treinta años... Aparte hice algunos goles en la Selección como para tener un poco de confianza personal... Pero, claro, no depende todo de mí."
