Batistuta is convinced that Argentina will rather easily obtain a place in the World Cup finals 2002 in Korea and Japan.

Batistuta está convencido de que la Argentina conseguirá, con

puedan ser comidilla para una controversia. Más bien hay que
interpretar algunos silencios, leer entrelíneas y deducir lo
poco que le gustan las consultas que lo ponen en la lucha por
un puesto con Hernán Crespo. Gabriel Omar Batistuta, que ante
Inglaterra volverá tras su ausencia por lesión en los dos
partidos en España de noviembre último, apela con cierto
fastidio a la frase "acá somos todos titulares", aunque
interiormente debe estar convencido de que nadie hizo más que
él para quedarse con la camiseta N° 9 del seleccionado.
Y gran parte de la razón le asiste cuando la estadística
marca que señaló 50 goles con la casaca nacional, cifra que
lo coloca no sólo holgadamente sobre Crespo (hizo siete),
sino sobre cualquier otro atacante que se busque en la
historia.
También se lo nota medido y sin expectativas grandilocuentes
sobre el amistoso de mañana.
Creo que es algo más lindo que importante. Y mi principal
motivación es el seleccionado en sí mismo, en cualquier
circunstancia. Será un clásico mundial, aunque para el
hincha argentino quizá no lo sea tanto como cuando nos
enfrentamos con Brasil.
Y está el plus de jugar en Wembley.
Sirve para que en el futuro uno se lo cuente a sus hijos,
pero todas las canchas son iguales.
¿Todas te significan lo mismo?
Bueno..., quizá no es lo mismo jugar en Wembley con la
Fiorentina que hacerlo con la celeste y blanca. A mí no me
va a pesar enfrentar a Inglaterra. Yo siempre trato de dar
lo máximo, sea contra el rival más fuerte o débil.
Además, vos tenés un buen recuerdo de ese estadio.
Sí. Sólo estuve una vez y con Fiorentina le ganamos a
Arsenal con un gol mío por la Copa de Campeones... Y fue un
golazo. Nos permitió saltar del cuarto al segundo puesto y
seguir en carrera.
Teniendo en cuenta que la Argentina, dentro de un mes, se encontrará en las eliminatorias con rivales con un ritmo y un estilo muy diferentes del de Inglaterra, ¿es lo más conveniente jugar este amistoso?
Siempre sirve medir fuerzas con uno de los principales
seleccionados del mundo. Más que ganar, a nosotros nos
interesa encontrar un funcionamiento. Ese es el objetivo de
este encuentro.
¿Qué sentís como más especial: hacer tu gol 51 en Wembley o el 50 que marcaste en Córdoba?
Aquel contra Colombia lo tomé como algo normal. Quizá
cuando deje el fútbol le daré la importancia que merece.
¿Con qué creés que Inglaterra puede complicar a la Argentina?
Eehhhhhh... No sé. Como son locales tendrán que ganar o
ganar. No sé bien cómo juegan porque yo por televisión no
miro fútbol inglés, ni italiano, ni de ningún otro lado.
¿Hasta qué punto sienten ustedes la presión de los clubes
para ceder cada vez menos a los jugadores a sus
seleccionados?
No es fácil. Los clubes son los que pagan y quieren contar
con sus empleados. Es una lucha en la que nosotros quedamos
un poco de lado. Termina un partido, tomás un avión, jugás
a los dos días y luego el regreso inmediato para meterte de
nuevo en tu equipo. Seguramente, el rendimiento baja un
poco. No queda otra que adaptarse a estos calendarios, por
más que no estemos de acuerdo con esto.
¿Ya estás pensando cómo serán las eliminatorias?
Sí porque es lo más importante que tenemos a corto plazo.
Nos vamos a clasificar. Y creo que ahora lo haremos con
menos fatiga que en las eliminatorias anteriores. Vamos a
ir al Mundial sin tantos problemas.
¿Eso lo decís porque Passarella sólo te llamó para un
partido en la segunda rueda de las eliminatorias?
... No te puedo responder eso.
¿Lo seguís bancando a Bielsa?
Lo más importante es que él me banque a mí y me lleve al
Mundial.
