England fans are being urged to respect both national anthems before the Nationwide international with Argentina at Wembley.

In recent years there have been several instances of England fans booing the opposition anthem - most recently before the second leg of the Battle of Britain with Scotland in November. But the England Members Club are calling upon fans to halt that practice, starting with the first meeting with Argentina since the World Cup encounter in St Etienne two years ago.

England Members Club spokesman Mark Perryman said: "The EMC wants to call upon every fan to respect both anthems before the match.

"We have experienced a few problems at games in recent years with the visiting team's anthem being booed. What we are aiming for is to be recognised as fans who are passionate but also show respect. It is important that the crowd gets behind the team and creates a really good atmosphere with lots of noise but let's do it in the right way."

Football Supporters' Association national committee member Kevin Miles said: "The FSA has long been committed to the promotion of goodwill between football fans of all countries. "Respect for the national anthems of opposing countries should be part of the British tradition of sportsmanship."
