Kevin Keegan (Coach)
- Has been in charge for just over a year (February 17, 1999).
- Was appointed full-time coach on a three-year contract on May 14, 1999. The
deal takes him through to the end of the 2002 World Cup finals.
- Was originally put in charge for four games on a part-time basis, combining
this role with that of Fulham's chief operating officer. He decided to take
the England job after he had led Fulham to the Second Division Championship,
saying that he couldn't do both jobs.
- He is the 11th man in history to take charge of England.
- He was capped 63 times by England between 1972-82 (29 as captain). Scored 21
goals for his country.
- He lost on only 3 of his 27 England appearances at Wembley. Scored 10 of his
England goals at Wembley.
- His record as head coach is: Played 9, Won 4, Drawn 4, Lost 1.
The side has conceded only 5 goals in those 9 games - more un-Keegan-like !!
- He has said that only winning the World Cup in 2002 will be enough to see him
hold onto his job.
- He played three times for England against Argentina, and was unbeaten in
all three - in 1974 at Wembley (drew 2-2), in 1977 in Argentina (drew 1-1)
and in 1980 at Wembley (scored in a 3-1 win).
- He has used 35 players in his nine games in charge, giving debuts to 11
players (Sherwood, Parlour, Brown, Gray, Carragher, Phillips, Heskey,
Woodgate, Dyer, Guppy and Lampard).
Gareth Barry (Aston Villa)

- Celebrates his 19th birthday today.
- First call-up.
- Trained with the senior squad during Hoddle's reign, before the Bulgaria game
in October 1998.
- Signed a new five-year contract at Villa earlier last year worth £2,500 a
week plus £7,500 for every game he plays.
- Capped 3 times by the England Under-21's (all last season).
- Played for the England Under-18's against their Spanish counterparts on
October 6, 1999.
- Made his Villa debut as a 17-year-old in May 1998.
- Scored two goals in his final two apps of last season - his first goals for
the club.
- Has started 27 of the last 28 Villa games this season. They have lost only 1
of their last 15 games. Will probably be back at Wembley in April for FA Cup
semi-final v Bolton.
David Beckham (Man Utd)

- Of course, was sent off v Argentina in France '98.
- His only goal in 27 internationals was that free-kick against Colombia in
France '98. Has yet to score his first England goal on home soil (in 14
apps).
- Missed the last friendly, v Belgium in October, with a hamstring injury.
- Has scored only 3 goals in 32 apps for Man Utd this season. Was sent off
against Necaxa in the World Club Championship last month. Was dropped by
Ferguson for the Leeds game on Sunday.
- Has scored at Wembley this season - a cracking free-kick v Arsenal in the
Charity Shield.
Sol Campbell (Tottenham)
Born: 18.09.74 Caps: 29 Goals: -
- Missed the first 3 internationals this season with a calf injury he picked up
on the opening day. Started both play-off games v Scotland at right-back.
- Was the most capped player under Hoddle - appeared in 22 of his 28 games in
charge (21 starts, 1 as a sub).
- Has yet to score a senior international goal (in 29 apps).
- Played under Keegan in both of his games in charge of the England U-21s in
1994.
- Was at Wembley to lift the Worthington Cup for Tottenham last March.
Andy Cole (Man Utd)

- Was picked for the squad for the Scotland games despite an outburst at
Shearer, saying that there was blatant favouritism towards the England
captain.
- His six caps have came under four different coaches. First capped by
Venables v Uruguay in March 1995. Made his only app under Hoddle v Italy at
Le Tournoi in June 1997. Played v France in February when Wilkinson was
caretaker coach, and has played v Poland, Sweden and Scotland under Keegan.
- Has never scored a senior goal at Wembley. Has scored there for England
schoolboys.
- Has played just 260 combined minutes of international football.
- Started Keegan's first two competitive games in charge (v Poland last March
and Sweden last June) - his first international starts.
- No goals in two starts with Shearer.
- Has yet to score for England.
- Had an incredible record under Keegan at Newcastle, scoring 68 goals in
84 games for the club in all competitions. Keegan signed him from Bristol
City for £1.75m in March 1993. Spent almost two years in the North East
before Keegan controversially sold him to Man Utd in a £7m deal in January
1995.
1998-99 season: Scored 24 goals in 50 games for Man Utd as they clinched the
treble.
This season he has scored 18 goals in 33 games for United, including four v
Newcastle on August 30. Was sent off at Anfield on September 11.
Kieron Dyer (Newcastle)

- Became Gullit's first English signing when costing £6m from Ipswich last
July.
- Last season was only his third as a professional since signing pro forms
for Ipswich in Jan 1997.
- England U-21 international with 10 caps (4 last season). Also won two B caps
in 1998 and was promoted to Keegan's full England squad for the Euro 2000
qualifier v Bulgaria in Sofia last June.
- Made an impressive debut v Luxembourg on Sept 4, 1999. Came on as a sub in
Poland on Sept 8, 1999 and started v Belgium in October. Missed out on
the play-off games v Scotland as he had a calf injury. Now has 3 caps.
- Has scored only 3 goals in 26 apps for Newcastle so far. Has scored only
once in his last 17 apps. Will probably be back at Wembley in April for the
FA Cup semi-final v Chelsea.
Rio Ferdinand (West Ham)
Born: 07.11.78 Caps: 8
- Only two of his eight caps has been in competitive internationals - they
were in Luxembourg in October 1998 (his only competitive start) and v Sweden
last June. Has yet to start a competitive international at Wembley.
- His last cap was as a sub v Sweden last June . Hasn't featured in last six
internationals. Was included in squad for play-off games v Scotland in
November. Was an unused sub in the second leg at Wembley.
- Has yet score for England.
- Has only ever scored two senior career goals (both for West Ham). The last
was in the Premiership v Coventry in March 1997.
Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)
Born: 30.05.80 Caps: -
- First call-up.
- Made his Liverpool debut as an 18-year-old in November 1998.
- His only goal in 35 games for Liverpool so far came in 4-1 Super Sunday win v
Sheff Wed on Nov 27.
- Has started each of the last 13 games in all comps.
- Will serve a one-match ban when Liverpool travel to Man Utd on March 4 (for
reaching five cautions).
- Served 3-match ban earlier this season, following his sending-off v Everton
at Anfield on Sept 27 (high tackle on Campbell).
- Has won 3 England U-21 caps.
- Now in his 3rd season as a Liverpool professional.
- Has been struggling with a groin injury in training.
Emile Heskey (Leicester)
Born: 11.01.78 Caps: 4 Goals: -
- His 4 caps have all been as a sub.
- Made his England debut as a sub in friendly in Hungary last April. Also came
on as a sub in Bulgaria last June, as a sub v Belgium in November, and as a
sub in second play-off game v Scotland. Now has 4 caps. Has yet to make his
full international debut.
- Once scored for England 'B' v Chile 'B' at West Brom in February 1998.
- Scored at Wembley late into extra-time of the 1997 Coca-Cola Cup final for
Leicester against Middlesbrough. They, of course, went on to win the trophy
in the replay. Will no doubt be playing in the final on Sunday.
- Has 16 caps (6 goals) for the Under-21's. Played for them against Luxembourg
on Sept 3.
- Has scored 45 goals in 195 games for Leicester.
- Has scored 7 goals in 32 apps this season, but scored only 1 in his last 15
apps.
Paul Ince (Middlesbrough)
Born: 21.10.67 Caps: 48 Goals: 2
- Joined Middlesbrough from Liverpool for £1m last August. Has signed a three
year contract.
- Won six major trophies at Old Trafford (2 league titles, 2 FA Cups, 1 League
Cup, 1 ECWC).
- Capped 48 times (2 goals) by England. Captained England three times in 1997-8
(v Italy, Cameroon and Morocco). Was an ever-present in France 98. Was sent
off v Sweden on Sept 5, 1998 - was handed a three-match ban. Has started the
last three internationals after being brought back by Keegan for the
friendly against Belgium last October.
- His two international goals were scored in a 7-1 win over San Marino in
November 1993 (Graham's Taylor's last game in charge).
- Put off an impending hernia operation to play in both play-off games v
Scotland.
- Is a man on a sinking ship at Boro at the moment - they have won only 2 of
their last 12 Premiership games.
Martin Keown (Arsenal)
Born: 24.07.66 Caps: 27 Goals: 1
- 27 caps (1 goal) for England.
- Missed the second leg of the play-offs v Scotland with a calf injury.
- Has started four of the five internationals this season alongside Adams.
- His only international goal was against Czechoslovakia in a 2-2 friendly draw
in Prague in March 1992.
- Hasn't scored for 13 months.
- Scored at Wembley for Arsenal in their Champions League game against
Panathinaikos in September 1998.
- Was sent off in the North London derby on November 7, 1999.
- Has been part of the Arsenal side which has lost their last two Champions
League games at Wembley (4-2 to Barcelona and 1-0 to Fiorentina).
Nigel Martyn (Leeds)

- 12 caps for England.
- 6ft 2in Cornishman.
- Played in the first two internationals this season (v Luxembourg and Poland
last September). Came on as a second half sub for Seaman in friendly v
Belgium last October. Was an unused sub for both play-off games v Scotland.
- Was a member of England's World Cup squad.
- Only Leeds player to have started all 36 games this season. Conceded 38 goals
in that time, keeping 15 clean sheets.
- In the Premiership, he has conceded 29 goals in 25 games, keeping 9 clean
sheets.
Gary Neville (Man Utd)
Born: 18.02.75 Caps: 34 Goals: -
- Has played in only 4 of the last 14 internationals. This after starting the
final three games of France 98.
- The last of his 34 caps was in a 0-0 draw in Poland in September 1999.
- He missed both legs of the play-off v Scotland with a groin injury.
- Scored 2 goals in 233 games for United. His last goal came v Everton at Old
Trafford in the Premiership in March 1999.
- Has had two spells out with a groin injury this season.
Phil Neville (Man Utd)

- 22 caps for England.
- Only 6 of 15 England starts have been in competitive internationals. His 5th
and 6th were in the play-off games v Scotland.
- Has yet to score an international goal (in 22 apps).
- Has played in all of Keegan's nine games in charge (5 starts and 4 as a sub).
- Scored 2 goals in 180 games for United.
Ray Parlour (Arsenal)

- Made his long awaited England debut as a sub v Poland at Wembley last March
(Keegan's first game in charge).
- Has since made one start (v Luxembourg last September) and three sub apps (v
Sweden and Bulgaria last June, and v Scotland in second leg of play-off).
- Missed the first leg of the play-off with Scotland with a hamstring injury.
- Also won an England 'B' cap v Chile 'B' in February 1998.
- Played under Keegan for the England U-21s against Austria in October 1994
(won 3-1).
- Was sent off at Wembley in Arsenal's Champions League game with Lens in
November 1998.
- Scored the winner v Man Utd in the Charity Shield at Wembley last August -

- Has recently returned from an ankle injury which forced him to miss 8 games
in December and January.
- Has been part of the Arsenal side which has lost their last two Champions

Kevin Phillips (Sunderland)

- Made his England debut in friendly in Hungary last April, starting up front
with Shearer. Won his second cap in friendly v Belgium on club home soil last
October - again with Shearer. Two goals in two starts for this partnership
(both goals for Shearer). Was an unused sub in the first leg v Scotland at
Hampden Park.
- Won an England 'B' cap as a sub v Russia 'B' in April 1998.
- Scored 25 goals (23 in league) last season as Sunderland ran away with the
First Division title.
- Has scored 83 goals in 105 games for Sunderland since his £325,000 move from
Watford in July 1997.
- This is his first season in the Premiership. Is the leading scorer in this
season's Premiership with 23 goals in 23 games, including 4 in the last 3.
- If he plays it will be the first he has at Wembley since their 1998 Division
One play-off final defeat on penalties to Charlton. He scored in the 4-4
draw.
Paul Scholes (Man Utd)

- 20 caps (9 goals) for England.
- Was sent off v Sweden last June.
- Scored a hat-trick v Poland in Keegan's first game in charge, last March.
- Scored both goals in 2-0 win at Hampden Park in first leg of play-off v
Scotland.
- Has scored 6 goals in 32 games for Man Utd this season. Put off an impending
hernia operation to play in the play-off games v Scotland. Missed Man Utd's
World Club Championship campaign after recovering from the hernia op.
David Seaman (Arsenal)
Born: 19.09.63 Caps: 55
- 55 caps for England. Has kept 31 clean sheets, conceding only 30 goals.
- Keegan is the 6th England coach he has played under.
- Has conceded only two goals in his last nine internationals at Wembley.
- Has, however, been part of the Arsenal side which has lost their last two
Champions League games at Wembley (4-2 to Barcelona and 1-0 to Fiorentina).
- Missed out on the two games v Luxembourg and Poland last September as he had
a calf injury. Had played in England's previous 14 competitive internationals
before then. Returned for both legs of play-off v Scotland.
- Has kept only two clean sheets in his last eight internationals.
- Saved a penalty from McAllister in the Euro 96 meeting.
- Has played in only 19 of Arsenal's 39 games this season as he has been
suffering with a persistent calf injury. Has kept only 5 clean sheets in his
19 apps.
Alan Shearer (Newcastle)

- Keegan made him the worlds then most expensive player when he signed him
for Newcastle from Blackburn for £15m in July 1996. Scored 17 goals in 25
apps under Keegan at Newcastle before he left the club in January 1997.
- Has 28 goals in 56 appearances for England (18 in 32 international apps at
Wembley).
- Is currently level with Steve Bloomer on 28 goals, and is joint seventh in
the list of England's all-time record scorers. If he scores tonight, he will
be joint sixth with Vivian Woodward.
- Has scored six goals in the last eight internationals, including a hat-trick
v Luxembourg on Sept 4 - his first international hat-trick.
- Has scored four times in the last three internationals in England (3 at
Wembley v Luxembourg and 1 v Belgium in Sunderland).
- Is set to captain his country for the 28th time.
- Is the only player to have started all nine of Keegan's games in charge.
- Had a dreadful start to this season with Newcastle. Was sent off for the
first time in his career v Villa on the opening day. Was then dropped to the
subs bench by Gullit v Sunderland - Gullit's last game in charge.
- But has now scored 23 goals in all, including 9 in last 11 apps. Will be back
at Wembley in April for the FA Cup semi-final v Chelsea.
Trevor Sinclair (West Ham)

- Yet to be capped at senior level. Has won Under-21 (5 caps) and 'B' honours.
- Was an unused sub in the first leg of play-off v Scotland, at Hampden Park.
- Joined West Ham from QPR in January 1998 with Dowie and Rowland going to
Loftus Road and West Ham also paying £2m.
- Scored 7 goals in 14 apps in 1997-8 for the Hammers following his transfer.
- His form was rewarded with an England 'B' cap v Russia at Lotfus Road in
April 1998.
- Versatile. Has played as a striker, midfielder and right wing-back for the
Hammers.
- Has scored 7 goals in 38 games for the Hammers this season (missed just one
game).
Gareth Southgate (Aston Villa)

- 33 caps (1 goal) for England.
- Has appeared in only 3 of the last 11 internationals. However, started the
second leg of play-off v Scotland at Wembley in place of injured Keown.
Scored his only international goal to date in Luxembourg in October 1998.
- Has missed just 3 Villa games this season. Scored 3 times (all in space of
two games - both in 2-1 Premiership win at Leeds on Jan 3, and then 1-0
winner v Southampton in FA Cup five days later).
- Has conceded two own goals this season (two out of a total of 25 in the
Premiership already this season).
- Was sent off at Leicester last September for a second bookable offence. He
was also charged by the FA with misconduct after comments made to referee
Jeff Winter, was fined £5,000 and warned about his future conduct.
- Will be back at Wembley in April for the FA Cup semi-final v Bolton.
Jason Wilcox (Leeds)
Born: 15.07.71 Caps: 2
- His 2 England caps have come almost three years apart (v Hungary in May 1996,
then v France in February 1999 - Howard Wilkinson's only game in charge).
- Joined Leeds from Blackburn for £3m in December, signing a 4-and-a-half year
deal.
- Appeared in each of last 10 Leeds games, starting the last 6. Scored his
first Leeds goal in 2-1 Premiership win at Sunderland on Jan 23.
- Had been at Ewood Park all his career. This was his 11th season there, having
signed pro forms in July 1989. Made 313 apps, scoring 34 goals.
- Member of their 1995 Premiership-winning team.
- Will miss the first leg of Leeds' UEFA Cup 4th rnd tie v Roma on March
2, as he is carrying a suspension from his last UEFA Cup campaign with
Blackburn. Was sent-off v Lyon in Sept 1998.
Dennis Wise (Chelsea)
Born: 16.12.66 Caps: 13 Goals: 1
- Chelsea skipper. Now in his 10th season with Chelsea after a then club record
£1.6m move from Wimbledon in July 1990.
- Is now Chelsea's most successful captain - has led them to all four of their
recent Cup successes.
- Captained Chelsea's 1997 FA Cup winning side at Wembley.
- Capped 13 times by England. Came on as a sub in friendly v Belgium last
October - his first cap for over three years, since as a sub v Hungary in May
1996. Was left out of Euro '96 by Terry Venables.
- His only England goal to date was the 1-0 winner v Turkey in a Euro 92
qualifier in Izmir in May 1991.
- Was sent off four times last season. Missed 15 games through suspension last
season.
- Was sent off in FA Cup tie v Leicester on Jan 30.
- Is on a misconduct charge at the moment. Was involved in an altercation with
Wimbledon's Kenny Cunningham that precipitated a flare-up in the tunnel at
Stamford Bridge.
- Will probably be back at Wembley in April for the FA Cup semi-final v
Newcastle.
Richard Wright (Ipswich)

- The only non-Premiership member of the squad.
- Born in Ipswich. Previously played in the Premiership with the Portman Road
club in May 1995.
- A former England Youth international.
- Has progressed through the junior ranks at Portman Road to become first
choice in place of Craig Forrest since January 1996.
- Has missed only seven league games since replacing Forrest in January 1996,
and hasn't missed once since February 1997.
- Kept a club record 26 clean sheets last season (in 54 games) - ever present
last season. Now played 165 consecutive games for Ipswich.
- England Under-21 international (14 caps). Hasn't played for them this
season (Nicky Weaver has taken his place).
- Called upto the full England squad for the first time last February for the
France game - was on the bench. Was also called up for the Bulgaria and
Sweden games last June, and for the Belgium friendly last October. Also
trained with the senior squad for the Moldova game back in September 1997.
- Named in PFA Div 1 team of last season.
- This season he has kept 13 clean sheets in 36 games.
