All Roads Lead To Holland

HOENDERLOO, Holland (Clarin, 22-3-99) -- The drizzle, of which is wrongfully said that it
bothers but does not soak, welcomed the first drop of Argentines in
Holland. The mercury of the thermometer remained stagnating at +5ºC
without any chance of rising any higher as the clock marked 15.20. The
omnibus carrying the Argentine technical crew as well as 13 players of
the Sub 18 team, who have not yet woken up from their dream of meeting
Batistuta, Redondo and Ortega today, opened its doors; but Marcelo
Bielsa, the ideologist behind this enormous engagement, did not make his
appearance. His Alitalia flight made a stop in the Italian capital of
Rome, where he went to stay along with assistant Javier Torrente and
doctor Donato Villani, to watch Almeyda in the match of Lazio who beat
Vicenza with 2-0.
The hotel Residence Victoria, which will serve as the preparatory center
for the clash with Holland at the 31st of this month, was chosen 20 days
ago by physical trainer Luis María Bonini. So far the youthful
sparring-team arrived; they will offer resistance to the star selection
that today will start to form an amazing line-up, not only because of
the names it is composed of, but also because of the moment and the
intensity each and every one of them will shine at.
The Argentine fortress is located at 100 kilometers south-east of
Amsterdam and a few minutes from Hoenderloo, a village with 2000
inhabitants located in the middle of an immense pine forest, the
characteristic tree type of the region. It is not the first time the
Residence Victoria is being used as a temporary home base for soccer
teams. Among others the Dutch national selection, Juventus, Barcelona
and Manchester United came to look for the tranquility that dominates in
this region, to spend their preseasons there. A soccer field in
accordance with the professional measurements, a gym, a conference room
with television and video equipment, a table tennis table, a tennis
court, a bowling alley and a conditioned swimming pool are some of the
comfortable facilities offered at this ample tourist complex, which is
compiled of several bungalows.
The Argentine players will daily stay at the largest building --
counting up to 32 double rooms -- among the surprised glances of Dutch
and German tourists.
Though yesterday was the first day of the Argentine arrivals, it was not
the most important day, since neither Bielsa nor any of the players who
will try to avenge the elimination from the last World Cup were present.
Of that group Bielsa will be the first one to arrive, along with his
companions. Later on the soccer players will join. Joining the technical
crew tomorrow will be doctor Daniel Martínez, physical trainer Gerardo
Salorio and physiotherapist Jorge Fernández, who will arrive at 11.45
after having contested the South American Sub 17 in Uruguay.
The hard work won't start until tomorrow, once the players have
recovered from the exertion of their teams' matches. By then, the
trainer and his 23 chosen will have talked of plans, revenges and
prospects. Then there will be nothing left to say except that the clash
with Holland will slip like a ring on a finger, because for some it will
be a revenge, for others the beginning of a pleasant project and for the
rest a dream worth enjoying.

incorrectamente que molesta pero no moja, le dio la bienvenida al primer
desembarco argentino en Holanda. El mercurio del termómetro estaba
detenido en el +5 sin ninguna posibilidad de seguir su camino ascendente
y el reloj marcaba las 15.20. El ómnibus que trasladó desde el
aeropuerto de Amsterdam al cuerpo técnico argentino y a los 13 jugadores
del Sub 18, que aún no despertaron del sueño de encontrarse hoy con
Batistuta, Redondo y Ortega, abrió la puerta, pero Marcelo Bielsa, el
ideólogo de tamaña movida, no apareció. La escala que hizo el vuelo de
Alitalia en Roma lo tentó para quedarse en la capital italiana y ver a
Almeyda en el encuentro que Lazio le ganó a Vicenza por 2 a 0, junto con
el ayudante Javier Torrente y el médico Donato Villani.
El hotel Residence Victoria, que servirá como centro de preparación para
disputar el cotejo con Holanda el 31 del actual, fue elegido por el
preparador físico Luis María Bonini hace 20 días. Hasta aquí llegó el
sparring juvenil, para hacerle frente a un seleccionado de estrellas que
comenzará a formar hoy una constelación asombrosa, no sólo por los
nombres que la componen, sino también por el momento y la intensidad con
la que brillan cada una de ellas.
El búnker argentino está situado a 100 kilómetros al sudeste de
Amsterdam y a pocos minutos de Hoenderloo, un poblado de 2000 habitantes
ubicado en medio del inmenso bosque de dennen, el árbol típico de la
zona. No es la primera vez que el Residence Victoria se utiliza como
lugar de concentración para equipos de fútbol, pues el seleccionado
holandés, Juventus, Barcelona y el Manchester United, entre otros,
buscaron la tranquilidad que reina en esta zona para realizar las
pretemporadas. Una cancha con las medidas profesionales, un gimnasio,
una sala de conferencias equipada con televisión y video, una mesa de
ping-pong, una cancha de fútbol-tenis, un bowling y una pileta
climatizada son algunas de las comodidades que ofrece este amplio
complejo turístico, compuesto por varios bungalows.
Los jugadores argentinos se alojarán en el edificio más grande -- cuenta
con 32 habitaciones dobles -- y diariamente se cruzarón con la
sorprendida mirada de los turistas holandeses y alemanes.
Pese a que el de ayer fue el primer desembarco argentino, no resultó el
más trascendente, pues ni Bielsa ni ninguno de los jugadores, que
intentarán tomarse el desquite por la eliminación del último Mundial,
estuvieron presentes. Del plantel, el primero en llegar será Bielsa,
junto con sus acompañantes. Después se sumarán los futbolistas. Al
cuerpo técnico se incorporarón mañana el médico Daniel Martínez, el
preparador físico Gerardo Salorio y el kinesiólogo Jorge Fernández, que
llegarán a las 11.45, después de haber disputado el Sudamericano Sub 17,
en Uruguay.
El trabajo comenzará sólo mañana, una vez que los jugadores se hayan
recuperado del desgaste que sufrieron en los partidos de sus equipos.
Por ese entonces, el técnico y sus 23 elegidos habrán conversado de
proyectos, revanchas e ilusiones. Entonces, no queda más que decir que
el encuentro con Holanda caerá como anillo al dedo, porque para algunos
será una revancha, para otros el comienzo de un grato proyecto y para el
resto un sueño digno de disfrutar.
